Plan wall finishes around repeats, edges, and the real display area
Wallpaper, panels, moulding, mirrors, and gallery layouts all use wall measurements differently. A wall area estimate may be enough for broad material planning, while wallpaper repeats, panel module sizes, and picture spacing require the actual width and height of each section.
Measure the usable wall first, then add the product-specific constraints. Keep electrical points, switches, furniture height, and sightlines on the sketch so decorative placement does not conflict with the room.
Before you calculate or buy
- Measure each wall section separately when widths or heights differ.
- Record wallpaper roll width, usable roll length, and pattern repeat before ordering.
- For panels or moulding, work from module dimensions and the actual start and end points.
- Check mirror and artwork weight against the wall and fixing method.
- Mock up gallery spacing with paper templates before drilling multiple holes.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Buying wallpaper from wall area alone without checking repeat and drop length.
- Assuming a centred layout will clear sockets, switches, furniture, or door trim.
- Using decorative spacing rules as a substitute for structural fixing guidance.
- Counting nominal product dimensions without allowing for joints, trims, or cuts.
