What the Bathroom Lighting Calculator actually calculates

Ambient lumens are area times lux, and vanity lumens are vanity width times the entered output per metre. Their sum is a planning total, not a measured lighting level. The engine does not assess face-lighting uniformity, mirror reflections, fixture positioning, or required electrical protection and moisture ratings.

The calculation path

Room area sets ambient lumens and vanity width sets face-lighting output.

Inputs that can change the answer

  • Bathroom area: Enter bathroom area in m².
  • Vanity width: Enter vanity width in m.
  • Ambient target: Enter ambient target in lux.
  • Vanity lumens per metre: Enter vanity lumens per metre in lm/m.

Checks that stay outside the formula

Select fixtures with the required local wet-zone or IP rating.

A practical order for entering the data

  1. Enter the bathroom floor area and intended ambient lux.
  2. Measure the vanity width and choose a vanity output target in lumens per metre.
  3. Review the ambient and vanity layers separately, and verify local wet-zone requirements for every proposed fixture location.

Engine check using the prefilled sample

Lighting example: bathroom area = 8 m², vanity width = 1.2 m, ambient target = 250 lux and vanity lumens per metre = 1000 lm/m. Treat these as demonstration room and fixture values, then recalculate with the dimensions and rated output of the fittings you are considering.

Worked example and purchase checks

The calculator keeps two lighting jobs separate. Bathroom floor area multiplied by the chosen ambient lux target gives a room-level general-light estimate, while vanity width multiplied by the chosen lumens-per-metre value gives a separate face-lighting allowance. The totals are added only for planning output and fixture comparison.

Illustrative worked example

An 8.5 m² bathroom with a 1.4 m vanity is planned with separate general and mirror-light layers before exact fixtures are selected.

How to read the result

Use the ambient and vanity figures as two separate design lines. Compare exact fixtures against each line, check mirror glare and facial shadows on the layout, and verify wet-location suitability and electrical requirements independently before purchase or installation.

Assumptions this example makes

  • The ambient lux and vanity lumens-per-metre values are planning targets chosen by the visitor, not mandatory standards supplied by the calculator.
  • Vanity width is the section intended to receive dedicated mirror or face lighting.
  • Fixture lumen ratings used later are comparable published outputs for the exact products being considered.

What this calculator does not prove

  • It does not assess bathroom electrical zones, ingress-protection ratings, circuit protection, wiring, glare, colour rendering, beam distribution, or local code compliance.
  • Reflective finishes, dark surfaces, ceiling height, diffusers, and fixture position can change the light that actually reaches the task area.
Bathroom lighting as separate layersSketch is explanatory, not to scale.

Mistakes that change this result

  1. Treating the combined lumen number as approval to install a fixture in a wet location.
  2. Relying only on a central ceiling fitting and ignoring shadows at the mirror.
  3. Comparing lamps by wattage rather than the published lumen output and beam characteristics of the exact fixture.

Bathroom Lighting Calculator — Lighting questions before choosing fixtures

Does the result specify an IP rating?

No. Required protection depends on local rules and the fixture's position relative to wet areas; confirm it separately.

Can a bright ceiling light replace vanity lighting?

The calculator does not establish that. Check how light reaches the face and whether overhead placement creates unwanted shadows.
