What the Ceiling Paint Calculator actually calculates
Ceiling area is length times width. Paint demand is that area times coats divided by coverage, increased by the entered waste percentage. This assumes one rectangular surface and does not deduct rooflights, round to cans, or separately estimate primer.
The calculation path
Ceiling length × width × coats is divided by coverage, then adjusted for waste.
Inputs that can change the answer
- Ceiling length: Enter ceiling length in m.
- Ceiling width: Enter ceiling width in m.
- Coats: Enter coats as a number; use the definition in the calculation method.
- Coverage per litre: Use the coverage per litre printed for the selected paint and surface, not the wall area.
- Waste: Percentage applied at the stage shown in the method; enter 10 for ten percent.
Checks that stay outside the formula
Flat ceiling paint hides minor surface imperfections better than reflective finishes.
A practical order for entering the data
- Measure the length and width of the rectangular ceiling surface in metres.
- Enter the intended coats and coverage per litre for the ceiling paint.
- Choose a waste percentage and use the resulting litres to select available can sizes.

Engine check using the prefilled sample
Paint and colour example: ceiling length = 4 m, ceiling width = 3.5 m, coats = 2, coverage per litre = 10 m²/L and waste = 8 %. Use these numbers to follow the calculation, then substitute the dimensions, coverage, coats, or preferences that match your room.
