What the Feet & Inches Calculator actually calculates
Both measurements are converted to inches and added. Whole feet are the sum divided by 12 and rounded down; the remaining inches are what is left after those complete feet are removed. Totals below 12 inches show zero whole feet, and inches above 12 in either input are carried automatically. No waste allowance or other length adjustment is applied.
The calculation path
Both measurements are converted to inches, added, then separated back into feet and inches.
Inputs that can change the answer
- First feet: Enter first feet in ft.
- First inches: Enter first inches in in.
- Second feet: Enter second feet in ft.
- Second inches: Enter second inches in in.
Checks that stay outside the formula
Enter inches greater than 12 if convenient; the result normalizes them automatically.
A practical order for entering the data
- Enter the first measurement as whole feet plus decimal inches.
- Enter the second measurement in the corresponding feet and inches fields.
- Read total inches and the normalized feet-and-inches result, which carries each complete group of 12 inches into a foot.
Project walkthrough: Measurement conversions without rounding errors
Engine check using the prefilled sample
Conversion example: first feet = 5 ft, first inches = 8 in, second feet = 3 ft and second inches = 11 in. The output shows the same quantity in another unit; keep the original value if you need to trace later rounding.
