What the Room Layout Planner actually calculates

The planner subtracts the group dimension plus twice the chosen clearance from each room dimension. Both remaining values must be nonnegative to pass. It tests an axis-aligned bounding rectangle, not individual furniture positions, rotation options, door swings, radiators, or access through the room.

The calculation path

Furniture width plus clearances is compared with the room dimensions to report fit and spare space.

Inputs that can change the answer

  • Room length: Enter room length in m.
  • Room width: Enter room width in m.
  • Furniture group length: Enter furniture group length in m.
  • Furniture group width: Enter furniture group width in m.
  • Desired clearance: Enter desired clearance in m.

Checks that stay outside the formula

Measure door swings and radiator projections before accepting a layout.

A practical order for entering the data

  1. Measure the usable rectangular room length and width.
  2. Enter the outer length and width of the whole furniture group, including intended internal gaps.
  3. Set the clearance required on every side and inspect both remaining-dimension results.

Engine check using the prefilled sample

Worked example: room length = 5 m, room width = 4 m, furniture group length = 3.2 m, furniture group width = 2.4 m and desired clearance = 0.75 m. Replace the sample dimensions with measurements from the room; split irregular areas into simpler sections where needed.

Project-specific method

Worked example and purchase checks

The tool treats the furniture group as one bounding rectangle and reserves the chosen clearance on every side. It subtracts group length plus two clearances from room length, and does the same across the width.

Illustrative worked example

Checking a sofa-and-coffee-table group inside a 4.6 m × 3.7 m living room with a 700 mm target margin.

How to read the result

A positive remainder means the bounding rectangles can fit under these assumptions. Use tape or a scaled plan next, especially when the result is close to zero.

Assumptions this example makes

  • Room and furniture group are represented as axis-aligned rectangles.
  • The same clearance target is used on each side.

What this calculator does not prove

  • It cannot model rotation, individual pieces, door swings, radiators, columns, or disconnected walking routes.
  • A passing fit does not establish accessibility or delivery access.

Mistakes that change this result

  1. Using only the sofa dimensions when the group also includes tables or chairs.
  2. Ignoring open drawers, recliners, or door swings.
  3. Treating a few centimetres of remaining space as practical circulation.

Room Layout Planner — Questions about this room measurement

Is clearance added on all four sides?

Yes. The same clearance is applied at both ends and both sides of the group.

Can rotating the group change the result?

Yes. Swap the group length and width and calculate again; rotation is not tested automatically.
