What the Sofa Space Calculator actually calculates
The width check subtracts sofa width plus two side clearances. The depth check subtracts sofa depth plus one front clearance. Both must be nonnegative for the fit message. It assumes the rest of the room depth is available and does not include a coffee table, opposite furniture, recliner extension, or delivery access.
The calculation path
Sofa dimensions plus side and front clearances are compared with room dimensions.
Inputs that can change the answer
- Room wall width: Enter room wall width in m.
- Room depth: Enter room depth in m.
- Sofa width: Enter sofa width in m.
- Sofa depth: Enter sofa depth in m.
- Desired side clearance: Enter desired side clearance in m.
- Desired front clearance: Enter desired front clearance in m.
Checks that stay outside the formula
Tape the sofa outline on the floor and verify door and stair access.
A practical order for entering the data
- Measure the usable wall width and room depth where the sofa will stand.
- Enter the sofa's full external width and depth, including arms and projections.
- Set the side clearance for each end and the front clearance, then inspect both spare dimensions.

Engine check using the prefilled sample
Worked example: room wall width = 4 m, room depth = 3.5 m, sofa width = 2.2 m, sofa depth = 0.95 m, desired side clearance = 0.15 m and desired front clearance = 0.9 m. Replace the sample dimensions with the real room and furniture sizes, then check doors, drawers and walking paths on a scaled plan.
