Illustrative worked example

Tile Grout Calculator checkpoint

A 21.4 m² tiled surface uses 600 × 600 mm tiles, 3 mm joints, 9 mm grout depth, and a 10% material allowance.

Decision from this checkpoint

Use the grout result to compare pack quantities, then verify the grout manufacturer’s coverage, joint-depth assumptions, and suitability for the tile and location.

  • Tile quantity and grout quantity are separate calculations.
  • Joint width and depth materially affect grout consumption.

Tools referenced in this project

Measure the tiled area and mark exclusions

Measure each rectangular section separately and record any areas that will not be tiled. For walls, distinguish the actual tiled height from the full wall height. For floors, note fixed islands, steps, recesses, and thresholds because they can affect both area and cutting. Keep a sketch with the measurements so the calculated area can be checked against the layout later.

Check the exact tile dimensions and pack coverage

Use the actual product dimensions and pack coverage from the supplier, not only the nominal size printed in the product name. Rectified tiles, modular formats, mosaics, and patterned sets can behave differently when laid out. If the supplier sells by pack, calculate the required area first and then round to whole packs using the coverage shown for that specific product.

Treat cutting allowance as a visible assumption

A simple waste percentage is a planning allowance, not a universal rule. Straight layouts in square rooms may create less waste than diagonal patterns, narrow corridors, many corners, or layouts that must maintain a repeated visual pattern. Record the percentage you used so it can be adjusted after a dry layout or installer review rather than hidden inside the total.

Calculate grout and adhesive from product instructions

Joint width, tile thickness, tile size, substrate, trowel notch, bed depth, and application method can change grout and adhesive use. Use the calculators to estimate quantities, then compare the result with the coverage table or calculator supplied by the grout and adhesive manufacturer. Different products can have very different stated yields even when the bag sizes are similar.

Dry-check the layout before the final order

Before ordering, mark a centre line or proposed starting point and test how full tiles and cuts will fall at visible edges, doorways, and focal points. A layout change can alter the practical waste allowance. Reconcile the final layout, number of packs, grout colour and quantity, adhesive quantity, trims, and delivery details in one purchase list.
